The Concern

What Is Pigmentation & Sun Damage?

Pigmentation refers to areas of the skin where colour is produced unevenly — appearing as darker patches, spots or an overall uneven tone. On the Sunshine Coast, our high levels of sun exposure make sun-related pigmentation one of the most common concerns we see in clinic.

Some of the changes we're most often asked about include:

Sunspots & Sun Damage

Small, darker patches that develop over years of cumulative sun exposure, most commonly on the face, chest, hands and shoulders. Sun exposure can also contribute to rough texture, broken capillaries and a loss of skin clarity over time.

Freckles

Freckles are small, concentrated areas of pigment that often become more visible after sun exposure. Many people love their freckles — for those who prefer a more even look, there are options we can discuss.

Uneven Pigmentation

Patchy or blotchy discolouration, sometimes with a dull or uneven complexion. This can have several different causes, including sun exposure, hormonal influences, post-inflammatory marks after breakouts and certain medications.

Important: pigmentation has many different causes, and different types respond to different treatments. This is why an individual assessment is always the first step — a treatment that suits one type of pigmentation may not be appropriate, or safe, for another.

Relevant Treatments

Depending on your individual assessment, your practitioner may discuss one or more of the following. Suitability is always confirmed in consultation.

IPL Skin Rejuvenation

Intense Pulsed Light can be used to target selected types of superficial pigmentation, such as sunspots and freckling, on appropriately assessed skin. IPL is not appropriate for every type of pigmentation — for example, melasma requires particular caution — and your practitioner will confirm suitability before any treatment.

Skin Peels

Selected peels may be recommended to support a brighter, more even-looking complexion. The peel — if any — chosen for you depends on your skin type, the type of pigmentation present and how your skin has responded to previous treatments.

Skin Needling

Where appropriate, skin needling may be included in a plan — particularly when texture concerns or post-inflammatory marks are present alongside pigmentation. It is generally not a first-line treatment for pigmentation on its own, and suitability is assessed individually.

Skincare & Sun Protection

Medical-grade skincare and diligent daily sun protection are the foundation of any pigmentation plan. They help support your results from other treatments and protect the skin from the UV exposure that drives pigmentation in the first place.

Why It Happens

Common Contributing Factors

Sun Exposure

Cumulative UV exposure is the most significant contributor to sunspots, freckling and sun-related skin changes.

Hormonal Influences

Hormonal changes can trigger pigmentation such as melasma, which behaves quite differently to sunspots.

Skin Trauma & Inflammation

Breakouts, picking and other inflammation can leave post-inflammatory marks that darken the skin's appearance.

Skincare & Lifestyle

Inconsistent sun protection, certain products and other lifestyle factors can influence how pigmentation develops and how visible it becomes.

Our Approach

How We Can Help

Every pigmentation journey at Ashlee Jess Aesthetics begins with a careful, complimentary assessment of your skin. We look at the type of pigmentation present, your skin's history and your goals before recommending anything at all.

Depending on your individual assessment, we may discuss light-based treatment with IPL for appropriate types of pigmentation, selected skin peels, skin needling where suitable, and medical-grade skincare with daily sun protection to support and maintain your results.

It's important to us that you understand your options — including what each treatment realistically can and can't achieve — so you can make an informed decision in your own time. Some pigmentation, such as melasma, requires a particularly cautious approach and may be better managed with skincare and sun protection rather than energy-based treatments.

Your First Step

What to Expect From a Consultation

Your complimentary skin consultation is a relaxed, obligation-free conversation. We'll discuss your concerns and how long they've been present, review your current skincare and sun protection habits, and examine the areas you'd like to improve.

From there, we'll explain the type of pigmentation we believe is present, which treatments may — or may not — be suitable, and what a realistic outcome looks like. You'll never be pressured to book a treatment on the day, and we'll always tell you honestly if we believe a different approach, including medical review, is the better next step.
